How to create, edit, and view data for reading groups

Do you want to log reading for all the students in an extracurricular program like a book club or lit circle? Creating a reading group is an easy way to track students' reading outside of the classroom.

Teachers and media specialists can create reading groups of up to 40 students from a range of grades and classes.

  1. Log in to the admin view with your teacher or media specialist account.
  2. Navigate to Classes and Readers > Groups. Here you can see and manage all your existing groups, as well as create new ones.

Creating a group

  1. Click the “Create a Group” button in the upper righthand corner to begin.
  2. On the new group form, give your reading group a clear, unique name, as this is how it will appear in reports.
  3. Then, click “Add readers to this group” to select one or more students for the group.
    • You can also type names into the search bar to find them from among all the students in your school. Once you’ve found a member, click on their name.
  4. When you’re finished adding members, click “Add Selected Readers.”
    • Once you have added the first batch of readers to your group, you can continue searching and adding readers as well as view and delete the readers that have already been added.
  5. Once done, scroll down and click Create This Group.

Editing a group

To edit an existing group:

  1. Return to the “Groups” page with the list of created groups.
  2. Click the pencil icon to the right of a group name to rename the group and add or delete readers.
  3. You can delete the group by clicking the trashcan icon.
    • Note: This is an irreversible action.

Logging reading for a group

To log for all readers in a group:

  1. Click the “+” icon button to the right of a group name.
  2. In the logging modal form, record the book and/or minutes read, just like you would when logging for a classroom.
  3. Click “Log.”

Viewing group data

  1. From the admin dashboard, navigate to Reports.
  2. Select the “Groups” section.
  3. Choose from the two group reports available:
    • “Individual Student Participation By Group”: Pick a specific school group and view the reading data for all students in that group.
    • “Student Participation Totals”: View participation totals for every group.

Note: Teachers and media specialists can only see and select their own reading groups, while media specialists plus can select any reading group on the site.
