What are the RMI Motivation Types?

The Reading Motivation Index (RMI) builds on work conducted by the National Reading Research Center to measure reading motivation factors and make personalized recommendations for each student. To help students and educators better understand their results, there are a total of 11 factors that readers may see in their results:

Intrinsic Factors

  • Confidence (The Lion): Students with this type believe that they can be strong, successful readers.

  • Challenge (The Climber): Students with this type read for the satisfaction of understanding complex or difficult texts.

  • Curiosity (The Detective): Students with this type enjoy learning new things through reading.

  • Enjoyment (The Fan): Students with this type may read for entertainment or to be deeply engaged in the text.

  • Importance (The Guardian): Students with this type believe that reading is important.

Extrinsic Factors

  • Compliance (The Closer): Students with this type may read because of an external goal or requirement in school.

  • Recognition (The Star): Students with this type read to achieve social recognition.

  • Grades (The Scholar): Students with this type have the desire to earn good grades by reading more.

  • Social (The Butterfly): Students with this type enjoy sharing insights or information about their reading with friends and family.

  • Competition (The Champion): Students with this type read to outperform others in reading challenges or competitions.

Additional Factors

  • Unknown (The Mystery): This type is a special case where the student answered "very" or "a little different from me" for all questions. In these cases, we are unable to determine which motivator type the student most aligns with.
