General FAQs

What are reading list challenges?

Reading list challenges are reading challenges that require readers to log specific titles in order to earn logging badges. Enrolled readers earn badges for logging minutes or books specific to the titles in a reading list challenge.

Readers enrolled in a reading list challenge will see an additional option when they log in the mobile and web apps to log for the reading list challenge. When readers select that option, Beanstack will present them with a list of titles available in the reading list challenge. Readers will select a title, and then enter their logging information (e.g., date and minutes read) for that title.

What if I want readers to earn badges for any reading?

Set up a regular reading challenge rather than a reading list challenge if you want readers to earn badges for reading any titles. You can use the all-ages reading challenge template to do this!

Reader Experience FAQs

How can readers tell if a challenge is a reading list challenge before enrolling?

The challenge preview card for a reading list challenge displays a label that says “Reading List.” You can also include information about the included titles within the challenge preview card description.

How do readers know which titles are part of a reading list challenge’s completion requirements?

Readers will see any specific required titles and/or the number of required titles displayed within the challenge page’s reading list tab.

How can readers track what titles they’ve completed in a reading list challenge?

Readers enrolled in reading list challenges will see a “Did you finish the book?” toggle in the mobile and web app logging form, and can toggle it on to indicate they’ve finished a title.

When a reader marks one of the titles in a reading list challenge as complete, they receive a congratulatory notification. The book covers for any completed titles show a green checkmark within the challenge’s reading list and reading log.

How do readers log backdated reading sessions for a reading list challenge that has already ended?

Once a reading list challenge is over, readers can still log their past reading sessions to count toward the challenge. To do so, they will navigate to their Challenges homepage and click the Past tab to view their past challenges. By selecting the desired reading list challenge and then clicking the Reading List tab, readers can click a specific title and then select Log Reading. On the logging form, they will need to input a date during the challenge’s timeframe in order for the session to count toward the reading list challenge’s badges and completion requirements.

Can titles include a link for readers to access our library’s catalog and check out the books on the reading list?

Yes! You can add custom links to any title in a reading list. Simply edit your challenge’s reading list, click the link icon below the title, paste in your URL, and save. When you log your reading, you’ll a “Go Now” option that takes you to the URL you set for it.

Admin Experience FAQs

Can I create an ongoing reading list challenge?

No. Reading list challenges must include start and end dates.

How do I add titles to the reading list?

Follow these steps to edit the reading list for your challenge.

What if my desired title or book cover isn’t showing up in the title search and selector window?

Our books database is incredibly large, but sometimes new releases or less widely distributed titles fall through the cracks! Please write in to our helpdesk if you’re trying to add a book that either isn’t appearing or doesn’t have a book cover.

Is there a limit to the number of titles I can add to a reading list challenge?

You can add up to 30 titles to a reading list challenge.

What types of badges can reading list challenges include?

Reading list challenges can only include minutes or books logging badges and activity badges.

So, reading list challenges can NOT include page or day logging badges?

That’s right! Minutes, books, and activity badges only.

Can reading list challenges also be points challenges?

No, reading list challenges cannot be points challenges.

How are book and minute logging badges awarded for reading list challenges?

Book or minute logging badges are awarded for logging book completions or minutes for any title in a reading list challenge. Book logging badges can be earned for multiple completions of the same book, just like in any challenge.

So, for instance, if you selected “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White, “Across the Risen Sea” by Bren MacDibble, and “The Undefeated” by Kwame Alexander for your reading list challenge, readers can log reading for any of those three titles in order to earn the challenge’s logging badges.

Do readers have to log all the titles in a reading list challenge to complete the challenge?

No. As an administrator, you can require readers to complete specific titles or all titles in order to complete the challenge, but this is optional.

How can I require readers to complete specific titles in order to complete a reading list challenge?

Within the reading list challenge creator’s completion requirements section, administrators can enable title requirements to select any number of titles from the challenge’s reading list to add completing those specific titles to the challenge’s requirements. Learn more about that here!

If I want to require readers to log some number of any of the titles in a reading list challenge for completion (rather than specific titles), can I do that?

Yes, you can require some titles within the challenge completion requirements.

Will I be able to see title completion information in reading list challenge reports?

Administrators can see information about the titles logged in reading list challenges in overview and detailed challenge reports, along with minute logging information if minute badges are included in the reading list challenge.

To see what titles were read the most by readers enrolled in a reading list challenge, you can run the Reading List Challenge Title Completions report for your selected reading list challenge, which can be accessed within the Participation section of your reports dashboard, and shows the number of completions for each title included in the challenge’s reading list.

Is there any new report functionality for reading list challenges?

Reading list challenge reports work the same way that existing challenge reports work, and reading list logging counts toward total logging activity on a site for reports not limited to challenges.

Can staff enter paper logs for offline readers enrolled in a reading list challenge the same way they log for readers in traditional reading challenges?

Administrators can still input logged reading for readers enrolled in a reading list challenge from the admin view. After selecting the reading list challenge’s log type, they will see an option to “Log For Reading List Challenge?” They can then select the appropriate reading list challenge and title to add to the reader’s log. Learn more about those steps here.
